From Island Roots to Mountain Mastery: The Kona Story
Kona bikes boast a unique heritage, born from a love of cycling and a connection to the Hawaiian islands. In 1988, Jake Heilbron, a passionate mountain biker nicknamed “Jake the Snake,” and Dan Gerhard, a fellow cycling enthusiast, joined forces on the shores of Vancouver, Canada. Their dream? To create high-quality mountain bikes that could conquer any terrain.
The name “Kona” served as a tribute to their inspiration – the Kona District on the Big Island of Hawaii. This volcanic landscape, with its challenging climbs and rugged trails, embodied the spirit of adventure they wanted to capture in their bikes.
Kona quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and durable steel hardtail frames. They were among the first brands to adopt the sloping top tube design, a revolutionary feature that improved frame strength and handling. Early Kona models, like the Hahanna (“hot” in Hawaiian) and Explosif, became synonymous with pushing the boundaries of mountain biking.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Kona continued to diversify its offerings. They introduced full-suspension mountain bikes, cyclocross bikes, and later, gravel bikes, catering to a broader range of riders. Their commitment to quality and a touch of Hawaiian flair – with quirky model names and vibrant paint schemes – solidified their place in the cycling world.
In 2022, Kona went through a brief ownership change, but in 2024, the company’s founders, Gerhard and Heilbron, reacquired the brand. This marked a new chapter for Kona, driven by the same passion and spirit of adventure that fueled their beginnings.
Today, Kona remains a respected brand in the cycling industry. Their bikes continue to be known for their durability, performance, and unique Hawaiian personality. From conquering mountain trails to exploring gravel paths, Kona offers a ride that’s as adventurous as its origins.
