From Taiwanese Quality to Global Brand: The Merida Story
Merida’s story began in 1972, fueled by a desire to prove the potential of Taiwanese-built bicycles. Founded by Ike Tseng, a passionate cyclist and entrepreneur, Merida initially focused on manufacturing bicycles for established foreign brands. However, Tseng’s vision went beyond mere production. He was committed to crafting high-quality bikes that could compete on the global stage.

This dedication to quality paid off. Merida quickly gained a reputation for its meticulous craftsmanship and innovative approach. They were among the first Taiwanese manufacturers to achieve ISO certification, a testament to their commitment to international quality standards.

In 1988, Merida took a bold step, launching its own brand. The name “Merida” embodied their ambition – a trio of syllables aiming to secure a well-deserved place on the international cycling scene. They didn’t stop there. Merida embraced cutting-edge technology, becoming early adopters of carbon fiber frames, a revolutionary material for lightweight and efficient bikes.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Merida continued to grow. They expanded their product line beyond road bikes, introducing mountain bikes and later, gravel bikes, catering to a wider range of riders. Their racing heritage played a significant role; sponsoring professional cycling teams like Bahrain-Merida provided valuable testing grounds and boosted brand recognition.

Today, Merida stands as a global leader in the cycling industry. Offering a comprehensive range of bikes for all disciplines and rider levels, they remain committed to quality, innovation, and performance. From its roots in proving Taiwanese excellence to becoming a globally recognized brand, Merida’s story is an inspiring journey of dedication and a passion for cycling.
